The Reading List: 2011

OK, this is an idea stolen from @rachelhatesjazz. But I’m not setting myself any targets on how many books I will read this year.

It won’t be the most thrilling of posts for most people, but I thought it would be interesting (possibly only to me!) to track what I’m reading during the year, see if I expand my author list at all. If you have any suggestions from the kind of books I’ve read, please feel free to comment, tweet me, (@the_helen) or find me on Good Reads.

  1. Nineteen Minutes, Jodi Picoult
    (4.5/5 – Picoult’s usual page-turning, heart-gripping, thought-provoking writing with a bitter-sweet twist)
  2. Girl Missing, Tess Gerritsen
(4/5 – not her best work but it was a transition book from her previous romance style to her current thriller – I’ll forgive her!)
  3. I, Alex Cross, James Patterson
(5/5 – although his books are fairly predictable in places he keeps the pages turning super fast)
  4. Cross Fire, James Patterson
(4/5 – if in doubt resurrect an old nemesis – that’ll do it)
  5. Port Mortuary, Patricia Cornwell
(3/5 – a return to the first person style I like, but it was hard work to keep going, definitely not her best work)
  6. Thin Blood, Vicky Tyley (*New author addition – achievement unlocked!)
(3/5 – polished, readable but doesn’t have the heart-stopping thrills of Patterson or Cornwell at her best. A good read and for $2.99 I’m not complaining!)
  7. Sleight Malice, Vicky Tyley
(3/5 – similar comments as her first one)
  8. Person of Interest, Theresa Schwegel (*New author addition)
(3/5 – liked it. want to read more. But they aren’t published in Kindle format.)
  9. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson (*New author addition)
(4/5 – really struggled through the first 100 pages or so but once I got hooked – couldn’t put it down.)
  10. Virals, Kathy Reichs
(4/5 – very different to her usual style, quite sci-fi in places but conceivable. Don’t know about the maturity of the characters for their ages though)
  11. Brittle Shadows, Vicky Tyley
(4/5 – another good one. Liking her style and liking that it’s an Australian author I’m supporting)
  12. Handle with Care, Jodi Picoult
(5/5 – Tears. Beautiful. Very delicate subject handled well.)
  13. Perdition’s Gate, James Somers (*New author addition)
(3/5 – Was skeptical about this one but it grew on me. Can’t wait for the next installment. The only issue was some spelling and grammar errors here and there.)
  14. Picture Perfect, Jodi Picoult
(4/5 – Not her usual style but compelling none-the-less)
  15. Saving Rachel, John Locke (*New Author Addition)
(4/5 – suspend belief and reality and this was a good read. I’ll certainly try his others.)

(5/5 – Gets better and better. Putting off reading the last one cos I don’t want it to finish!)
